Batten Disease Types Batten Disease News.
Batten disease is a severe, heritable nervous system disorder. Although originally used to describe only the form of the disease that begins between the ages of 5 and 10, or juvenile-onset disease, the term Batten disease is now used to describe a group of five related conditions, all collectively known as neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses NCLs. NCLs are caused by the buildup of insoluble waste deposits called lipofuscins in the cells of the eye and brain, as well as skin, muscle, and many other tissues, resulting in cell death. The five broad types of NCL are discussed below.
